Common questions

Can I use Anlan without an Apple Watch?

No. Anlan records each meditation on Apple Watch: heart rate, wrist stillness and breathing all come from the watch. You need an Apple Watch with watchOS 26 or later, paired with an iPhone on iOS 26 or later. There is no iPad version.

How do I start, and how do I finish early?

On your watch, open Anlan, turn the Digital Crown to choose anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours (past an hour, the dial goes round again), then press and hold anywhere on the screen for 3 seconds. You'll feel three light taps while you hold.

To finish early, press and hold for 3 seconds again. A meditation shorter than one minute isn't saved.

Why does Anlan need Health access?

Anlan asks once for six items, and uses them only on your watch and iPhone:

  • Writes a Mind & Body workout (a running workout keeps Apple Watch measuring your heart rate through the whole meditation) and Mindful Minutes.
  • Reads heart rate (to tell whether your body settled), resting heart rate (your usual), sleep (when you were asleep, and your usual bedtime for Quiet Hours) and respiratory rate (only while asleep, as a reference).

Heart rate is required. Without the others, results are rougher. Breathing during a meditation is estimated from wrist movement and doesn't need Health. See the privacy policy for details.

I said no to Health access. How do I turn it back on?

On iPhone, open Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › Anlan and turn on what you're comfortable with. Heart rate, and saving Workouts, are needed for a result; without them the watch still records the length. You can also get there from the Health app: tap your profile picture, then Apps, then Anlan.

Apple doesn't tell apps whether read access was granted, so Anlan can't always warn you. If a meditation says "No heart rate", check here first.

A meditation says "No heart rate". What can I do?
  • Wear the band snugly, just above your wrist bone, with the back of the watch clean and dry.
  • Make sure Wrist Detection is on in your Apple Watch settings.
  • Check that heart rate access is on for Anlan (see the question above).

Very short meditations show "Too short to tell": there isn't enough time to see whether your body settled.

Time was up, but my watch didn't vibrate.

Anlan ends a meditation quietly, with no vibration and no sound, in these cases. The meditation is still saved at the planned time.

  • The bell on the watch start screen was crossed out. Tapping it means this meditation ends quietly (the screen says "No wake-up this time"). It's set again for each meditation.
  • Quiet Hours. By default (Automatic), they run from an hour before your usual bedtime to an hour before your usual wake time, worked out from the last 14 nights of sleep in Health. They start once you've worn your watch to sleep for 3 nights. When a meditation would end inside them, the bell on the watch start screen is crossed out and the screen says "Bedtime hours: no wake-up" or "Quiet hours: no wake-up"; tap the bell to be woken as usual this time. Change it in Anlan › Settings › Quiet Hours: Automatic, Custom or Off.
  • Sleep Focus is on. If you add Anlan's "Don't Wake Me" filter to a Focus, such as Sleep, in iPhone Settings › Focus, the bell is crossed out while that Focus is on and the screen says "Sleep Focus: no wake-up". Tap the bell to be woken as usual this time.

Otherwise, look at Anlan › Settings › Wake Up: Gradual Wake sets how long the vibration builds, Haptic Strength how strong it is, and Keep Vibrating keeps it going until you raise your wrist, for up to 5 minutes. The singing bowl sound doesn't play when your watch is in Silent Mode; the vibration still does.

Why are some minutes marked "asleep"?

If you fall asleep during a meditation at night (in Quiet Hours, or a meditation that ended quietly), Anlan reads the sleep your Apple Watch recorded in Health and marks those minutes as asleep. They don't count as still. Your watch usually saves sleep after you wake up, so until it arrives the result says your sleep record hasn't synced yet.

How do I restore my membership?

Sign in with the same Apple Account you used to buy it. In Anlan, tap the gear on the home screen to open Settings, tap the row under Subscription, then tap Restore Purchases at the bottom of the card. This works for subscriptions and Lifetime Membership.

How do I cancel a subscription?

On iPhone, open Settings › your name › Subscriptions › Anlan and tap Cancel Subscription. You can also get there from Anlan › Settings by tapping your membership row.

  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to stop the next renewal.
  • Cancel before a free trial ends and you won't be charged.
  • Deleting the app doesn't cancel a subscription.
  • When a subscription ends, your meditations stay recorded and Anlan goes back to the version without membership.

Lifetime Membership is a one-time purchase, so there's nothing to cancel. If an Annual Membership is still renewing after you buy Lifetime Membership, Anlan will remind you to cancel it. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How do I export or delete my data?
  • Export: Anlan › Settings › Export Data creates a CSV file, one row per meditation, and opens the share sheet. Export is always free.
  • Delete: deleting all records in Anlan's Settings removes every meditation from your iPhone. This can't be undone.
  • Health: Mindful Minutes and workouts Anlan saved stay in Health. Delete them in the Health app.
  • Everything: delete Anlan from your iPhone and Apple Watch.
I got a new iPhone. Where are my meditations?

Anlan has no account and no cloud of its own, so your meditations live on your iPhone.

  • If you set up the new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup of the old one, your meditations come back with it.
  • Mindful Minutes and workouts in Health move with your Health data (Health in iCloud, or the backup).
  • Without a backup, Anlan can't move your meditations to the new iPhone. To keep a copy, export a CSV from the old iPhone first.
  • Your membership comes back with Restore Purchases.
Is Anlan a medical device?

No. Anlan is not a medical device. Results are estimates. If you have concerns about your health, talk to a doctor.
